Ultima remains one of the oldest and most wellknown RPG series in computer gaming. The second game in the series continues the story after you defeated the evil wizard Mondain and brought peace to the land. Mondain had an apprentice called Minax though and now she is out for revenge against you. She travels to earth, where the hero resides, and instigates a nuclear war thus wiping out the heroes homeplanet. Now with the help of Lord British you must tavel through space and time to find Minax and prevent these events from happening and thereby saving yourself.

Though the game is very much like the first there are some improvements like more towns and you can travel through time on earth in four different periods, 9 million bc, 1423 bc, 1990 ad and 2112 ad. You can visit each of these by going through timedoors which are scattered around the world but to visit some areas you will need to bring items from other time periods. The 2112 ad period is pretty much void of human life as the nuclear was has destroyed but there is a rocketship you need but can only get to it using airplane. It all sounds a bit strange for an RPG where you use swords and such to combat ogres and orcs but flight and even space travel is a part of this game. Later on there is another stage called legends which is where Minax is hiding and this is basically one huge fight with all the minions she has gathered.

There are the usual RPG things like making a character and distributing skill points. You can increase your stats by fighting monsters and you can even pay Lord British himself and if you give enough he will help you increase you health. There are also dungeons and towers which are displayed in static 3D which was also in the first game, unfortunately there is no real reason you need to visit these as the monsters are much harder but the monsters are much harder than outside and there are no quests that need you to go there.
Graphically things haven't changed much, at the time it might have been ok but there is no animation at all and all of the graphics are extremely simple. We won't about music or sound because there is none really except for some very basic stuff.

Mmm altough Ultima is part of gaming history it doesn't automatically mean the entire series is very good. The first game was the first probably of it's era but this game simply adds more stuff to the game, that doesn't mean it's better because there are no quests at all in the game other than you main objective which can make adventuring really annoying. The only thing you do is fight monsters to gain experience and money until you have enough to go to the final showdown, without anything in between it can become extremely boring. The space settings also really doesn't fit the game in my opinion. As a series Ultima was often on the edge of new technology and/or gameplay, this part does some of that but unfortunately it's simply not enjoyable enough. Only the most hardened ultima could ever complete this game and you yourself know if you are one. If you do not no how to play this game, find the Ultima 2: The Revenge of the Enchantress guides here.
