The Bane Of The Cosmic Forge is the first part in the three-game story arc that spans Wizardry 6-8. It has always been so that the Cosmic Lords had possession of an artefact, the Cosmic Forge, a pen, that had the ability to alter everything in the cosmos. Of course, a pen with such powers was doomed to be stolen one time. And so it did.

The new King and his Wizard managed to obtain that pen, after which they wrote things so evil.

But this didn't last for long, because they became jealous of each other, and wanted the pen for themselves.

Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge marks the beginning of a Trilogy [Wizardry VI through VIII] that takes place within the Wizardry campaign milieu.
As in most classic RPGs there is a legendary artefact that must be recovered in order to make things right again. Apparently that old saying "the pen is mightier than the sword" had it's origins with the Cosmic Lords who's most sacred possession, a pen that could literally rewrite the history of the universe and everything in it, really was mightier than any sword! This pen was called the Cosmic Forge. Anyway, to make a long story short. A powerful Wizard steals the plenipotentiary pen from its original owners, the Cosmic Lords. The Evil Wizard and his ally, a Tyrannical King, fight over possession of The Cosmic Forge. The Cosmic Forge ultimately gets stowed away somewhere in the depths of a deep dark dungeon full of nastiest beneath a forbidding castle abandoned by the King and Wizard two centuries earlier. But not before the dark wizard and corrupt king had some fun doing a little rewriting of their own with the Cosmic Forge. Now, it is up to you to wrest it from evil hands and deliver it safely into the hands of those responsible enough to handle its awesome power.
The style of gameplay builds on the tried and true first person 2d graphical dungeon crawl formula established by the earlier Wizardrys. It is like an earlier version of Eye of the Beholder. The end of this Trilogy marks the end of this style old school RPG style in the Wizardry series which began with Wizardry one and inspired many other legendary classic RPGs like The Bard's Tale one, two, and three, Eye of the Beholder, the Forgotten Realms Gold Box games by SSI and TSR. These games all featured the first person perspective, turn-based combat, building and developing not just a character but a team of them called a party or a blob with just the right balance of talents or attributes and skills, races and classes to get the job done and get out alive. There was also a lot more text and story telling involved in these classic RPGs which you don't find as often in the newer 3D RPGs.
These old school RPGs also made you think with their ingenious puzzles. Must have.
